The vibrant celebration marking the start of Hispanic Heritage Month and Mexico’s Independence Day took center stage in Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. Local organizations joined forces to share their rich culture with the community, kicking off a series of festivities.
The fourth annual Latin Cultural Festival, hosted by 102.3 La Mega, offered a lively mix of music, food, and family-friendly activities. Event Coordinator Jill Wydra highlighted the festival’s growth, stating, “This year, we have a wider variety of foods and a dedicated kids’ zone, expanding beyond previous years’ music and limited food offerings.”
Community member Elizebath Perez emphasized the event’s significance: “We must celebrate and showcase our culture. Bringing our food and traditions to the forefront helps others appreciate who we are.” As the Hispanic community grows, Perez believes these events help maintain cultural visibility.
Jonathan Alcantara, one of the festival organizers, noted the event’s educational role: “Today is special for the Hispanic community of Wilkes-Barre. It’s our chance to share our culture, food, and drinks with everyone.”
The festival not only provides entertainment but also fosters cultural understanding and appreciation within the local community.
