Zheng Lijuan’s Escape
Panamanian authorities are actively searching for Zheng Lijuan, a Chinese woman who escaped a Panama City hotel. She was being held after her deportation from the US. Zheng was among 299 migrants from countries such as China, Afghanistan, and Iran, who were flown into Panama in recent days. Authorities believe locals helped Zheng escape from the Decapolis hotel.
Migrants Moved to the Darién Region
Meanwhile, 170 deported migrants were relocated to the Darién region, a dense and lawless area near the Colombian border. This move is part of Panama’s plan to control the flow of migrants. The country recently signed an agreement with the US to prevent migrants from crossing the dangerous Darién Gap, a treacherous jungle route between Central and South America.
Panama Expands Border Control Measures
In response to the agreement, Panama has increased patrols along the border and expanded migrant camps. A new facility in Metetí, near the Colombian border, will accommodate larger flights. However, Panama struggles to deport migrants to their home countries because of limited international agreements. As a result, many migrants remain in Panama, fearing dangerous conditions in their countries of origin.
Panama’s Role in US Deportation Policy
Panama’s participation in the US deportation plan has sparked criticism. The country faces increasing pressure to house individuals who the US cannot easily deport. In addition, Costa Rica has agreed to accept 200 migrants to avoid economic consequences from US trade policies.
Diplomatic Tensions in the Region
Both Panama and Costa Rica now navigate complex migration issues. Diplomatic pressures are rising, and the countries must balance international relations with the growing demands of managing migrant flows.
