A man is facing charges in connection with the murder of a woman set on fire while asleep on a subway train in Brooklyn. Sebastian Zapeta, 33, was arrested on Monday. He faces first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and arson charges. The deadly attack occurred on an F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station.
Attack Shocks the City
The incident happened early on Sunday morning, around 7:30 a.m. The woman, whose identity has not been released, was asleep on the subway when Zapeta allegedly used a lighter to ignite her clothing. The flames spread quickly, and despite efforts from police and a transit worker to put out the fire, the woman died at the scene.
Suspect Identified and Arrested
Zapeta remained at the station after the attack. He sat on a bench near the platform as the woman burned. Authorities later identified him through body camera footage and subway surveillance. Local teenagers recognized Zapeta from photos released by the NYPD and called 911. Police arrested him a few hours later at the 34th Street-Herald Square station. He was wearing the same clothing as described in the reports and had a lighter on him.
Immigration Status Under Scrutiny
In addition to the charges, authorities are investigating Zapeta’s immigration status. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that Zapeta had been deported to Guatemala in 2018. However, he unlawfully reentered the U.S. at an unknown time. ICE officials are working with the NYPD to address his immigration violations.
