TEL AVIV – Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant issued a stark warning on Monday, saying the window for a diplomatic resolution with Hezbollah is closing quickly. His comments came after a phone call with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
Diplomatic Efforts Under Pressure
Gallant emphasized that Hezbollah’s alignment with Hamas is escalating tensions.
“The possibility for an agreed framework in the northern arena is running out as Hezbollah continues to tie itself to Hamas,” Gallant told Austin.
U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein, who has been leading de-escalation efforts, is expected to return to Israel. He plans to meet with both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Gallant.
Clashes Continue Along the Border
Since the start of the Gaza war nearly a year ago, Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire almost daily. Most of the casualties have been Hezbollah fighters. The fighting has displaced tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border and caused widespread damage in nearby towns.
Conditions for Ceasefire
Hezbollah has said it will stop attacks only if there is a ceasefire in Gaza. Gallant reiterated that Israel is committed to securing its northern border and ensuring citizens can return home safely.
He also stressed that Israel’s main objectives remain the destruction of Hamas and the return of hostages — “by any means.”
Israel’s Demands
Israel has also called for Hezbollah’s withdrawal from the border, as required under a United Nations resolution.
